Managing Menus
The ARCS websites uses many menus. Each of these menus can be placed in different places on the website. Each Chapter (domain) can have their own links for the same menu.
Adding a Menu Item From a Node
When you create or edit a piece of content (node) you can add the node to a menu. This could be a new Custom Panel Page, Scholar Page, Webform, etc.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the Provide a menu link checkbox to enable the menu options
- Provide a Menu link title
- Select the Parent Item. This is the item that is directly above the item you are creating. In the menu item should be a top level link just select the menu name like . If the menu item should be displayed under the Members dropdown in the menu then select ---Members. The location of the menu can be more easily adjusted with the instructions below.
- Weight is a numeric assignment of the position in the menu. This is very challenging to work with. You are better off placing the menu item and then adjusting it with the instructions below.
- See the instructions below on the Menu Link Attributes and Menu Item Attributes.
- Save the node as you would usually do and your menu item will be created.
If a menu item cannot be added where you want please contact Cividesk to enable additional locations.
Accessing Menus
Menus can be found by going to Structure -> Menus. On this page, you will find all of the menus for all the domains.
Generally, when you want to change a menu you are changing the links rather than the settings for the menu.
Go to the menu that you want to change and click Link Links.
Listing Links
When you go to the page that lists the link you will be shown all of the links for the menu for the domain you are editing.*
Links that are aligned left are the top level. Links that are indented are displayed a level in.
Enabling and Disabling Links
Sometimes we do not want to get rid of a link. We can disable to link by clicking the Enabled button for each link.
Manage Item Visibility Per-Domain
If you edit a menu item you have options for managing the visibility of menu items for specific domains.
The first set of checkboxes lets you explicitly shown menus on items on a specific domain. See above.
The second set of checkboxes allows you to explicitly remove a menu item from a domain.
Menu Link Attributes and Menu Item Attributes
Each link (set the same for all Chapters) has the ability to set several custom attributes. The only option we will discuss in this documentation is Target.
The default for the Target field is None (i.e. same window). This means the link will open in the same tab/window. Sometimes, however, you may want the link to open in a new tab/window and you can select New Window (_blank).
The other options provided in this drop-down menu do not relate to the ARCS site. The other attributes that can be changed require a subsequent change to the theme to be reflected.
